Case Study - How Ben Lost Over 13kg and Rebuilt His Confidence

When Ben first reached out, he wanted to feel like himself again — to lose weight, particularly around his face, feel fitter and stronger, and get back into running. He wasn’t new to training, but he’d hit a wall. The motivation wasn’t there, and without structure, progress had completely stalled.

Like a lot of people who message me looking for a personal trainer in Newcastle (or personal trainer in Gosforth to be specific), Ben didn’t just want to “lose weight.” He wanted to feel confident again.

1. Ben’s Challenges

Before we started working together, Ben felt stuck. He was training but not seeing results, and the lack of visible progress made it harder to stay consistent. He was frustrated with how he looked, didn’t feel comfortable in clothes that used to fit, and wanted to rebuild his confidence after letting things slip during a busy few years at work.

That’s where we started — a clear goal: lose weight, feel fitter, and rebuild confidence.

2. What We Did

Ben started working with me at both The Gym Group in Gosforth and Jesmond Pool, focusing on a mix of strength training and conditioning.

We built a programme designed around his goals:

  • 2 structured strength sessions per week to build muscle and improve body composition. We didn't need more than this.

  • Progressive overload to get stronger week by week

  • Simple, sustainable nutrition process to help him lose fat without giving up everything he enjoyed. *This is the most important part*

  • Weekly check-ins and accountability to keep him on track and make adjustments as needed

  • Some level of cardio: We did not make him to intense cardio or lots of cardio several times per week.

We also worked on improving his running fitness — something he’d lost confidence in — by gradually reintroducing runs and tracking progress.

3. The Result

Over the process, Ben dropped over 13 kilograms, rebuilt his fitness, and completely changed how he felt about himself.

He looks leaner, stronger, and fitter — but more importantly, he’s confident again.He’s back running, enjoying training, and feels like he’s in control of his health and habits for the first time in years.
